From Protests to Mid-Terms

Dear Friend,

If we can turn out record-breaking numbers on Whidbey Island and across the nation, we can win the midterms this November.

Last Saturday was an inspiring display of patriotism, solidarity, and energy. In Oak Harbor, Coupeville, and Bayview, and at thousands of locations across the country and the world, We the People showed up with joy and determination. We made it very clear that we refuse to accept a nation run by would-be kings and oligarchs bent on destroying the foundations of our democracy and civil rights.

See pictures of the protest in Oak Harbor.

Now let’s turn that energy into action.

Midterm Organizing

It is critical that we turn the tide in this year’s midterm elections. This is the best way to shut down the fascist agenda, say no to White Christian Nationalism, end illegal wars, and reclaim the rule of law and due process. We have the numbers and the will to do it! To win, we need everyone working on Whidbey Island, across Washington, and across the nation.

Indivisible Whidbey is organizing around the midterms, with teams working on Whidbey Island races (there are MANY, and they are important!), state races that could impact the U.S. House, and national races where we can help flip seats in other parts of the country. Here are some ways for you to get involved:

Join the Research Team

We are forming a research team to help inform endorsements on Whidbey Island. This work involves computer sleuthing and potentially attending local community and government meetings. The goal is to understand candidates and where they stand on protecting democracy and civil rights. This is fun work to do at home or with others.

Skills: Communication, project management, and computer literacy.

Support: Our Whidbey elections lead, communications team, and Steering Committee will all work with the research team.

Time commitment: 2-6 hours per week.

Email us to join the team!

Postcarding Needs You!

Our busy postcarding team is already hard at work.

You can meet them on Wednesday, April 8, from 1 pm - 2:30 pm at the Freeland Library.

Come by and write some postcards or pick up an assignment to take home and do on your own time. This is a fun and easy way to make a difference!

Democracy Fest

Saturday April 18

11 am - 3 pm

Greenbank Farm

This free event will feature games, education, music, food trucks, and the opportunity to learn and engage in protecting democracy.

Democracy Fest is a non-partisan event sponsored by The League of Women Voters Whidbey, Indivisible Whidbey, and other members of the Whidbey Island pro-democracy coalition. Learn more and see the schedule.

Ice Cream Social & Annual Membership Meeting

Save the date for our June meeting!

Our second annual ice cream social and membership meeting will be held on June 28 at 1 pm.

At this meeting, we will give everyone the opportunity to participate in deciding who to endorse in the upcoming Whidbey Island primaries. This is going to be a great opportunity to work together, evaluate the candidates, and decide where to throw our support. Mark your calendar and stand by for details. (We’re shooting for a mid-island location and there will be ice cream!)

Special Volunteers Needed

As Indivisible Whidbey grows, we need a couple of people to help us manage incoming volunteers. Our amazing island community has a lot of people who want to get involved. Our Volunteer Coordination Leads will contact volunteers who sign up and route them into roles that work for them and have an impact.

This is a role that several people could share. Individuals in the north, middle, and south parts of the island could easily attend monthly community socials, where lots of our new volunteers sign up.

Skills: Communication, interpersonal/soft skills, project management, computer literacy, attention to detail

Support: This role will work closely with our leads and the steering committee.

Time commitment: 2-6 hours/week.

We'd hate to be a group that drops the ball when someone raises their hand to get involved. (Sorry if that happened to you.) We need everyone! Help us value each volunteer and make good use of their time and skills.

Contact us if you would like to be one of our volunteer coordinators.

Gratitude

We end this jam-packed email with gratitude:

  • For everyone who showed up to protest last Saturday
  • For the Music Brigade, who made music and led chants
  • For the donation of porta-potties!
  • For our photographers and videographers who captured the scene
  • For the Handmaids who made a dramatic appearance
  • For the whimsical costumes and hilarious signs
  • For everyone who donated to Neighbor to Neighbor to support immigrant families
  • For our SOS Whidbey Peacekeepers who kept us safe

And most importantly, for this community that sustains us during challenging times.

With gratitude,
Indivisible Whidbey Steering Committee

P.S. Read what the Whidbey News Times said about our protest last Saturday.
