Dear Friends,

With King Tides this week, it’s time to start thinking about the Blue Tide that is going to sweep the nation in next year’s mid-term elections. Momentum is shifting. People across the country are waking up. The fascist regime in power will end, and We the People will reclaim our democracy!

Indivisible Whidbey is planning for the 2026 tsunami, including:
  • Advocating for democracy and civil rights in the upcoming Legislative Session in Olympia.
  • Participating in next year’s elections on Whidbey Island by encouraging people to run for office and supporting candidates who align with our values.
  • Using the might of Indivisible Whidbey to have an impact in key races in Washington State.
  • Creating avenues for Whidbey Islanders to help in elections in other states.

Are you in? Look for ways to get involved coming soon, and plan to attend our January membership meeting to get to work.

Meanwhile, here some immediate actions:

Ready to TAN?The Take Action Network (TAN) is an easy and effective way to stand up for democracy and make your voice heard on a variety of issues. Once you sign up for TAN, you will have access to a statewide organizing hub where you can select issues of interest and also see issues Indivisible Whidbey is sharing, along with actionable steps and suggested scripts for phone calls and emails. With a few clicks, you can have your say and make sure Washington leaders hear your voice.

Join TAN via the Indivisible Whidbey website. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the link to sign up.

Look for us to feature TAN actions for Indivisible Whidbey members to take regularly. Our goal is to build TAN membership (currently at 142 people) and increase actions taken (currently about 100 in the last six months). Join TAN today and tell a friend

Music for a Cause THIS SATURDAY

11/25/2025

We hope to see you this Saturday as we come together for Whidbey Rising, a benefit concert to feed our island community. We have an incredible array of island musicians who will inspire and delight you. We’ll have an informal community reception afterward to celebrate the work we are doing (and the fun we are having!) while supporting our neighbors.

Whidbey Rising
Saturday November 22
2:00 pm (Doors open at 1:30)
Coupeville High School Performing Arts Center

Pay what you can, and please give generously. You can donate now even if you can’t make the concert. Money raised will go to the Whidbey Food Resilience Fund, administered by the Whidbey Community Foundation. It will be shared across the island with food banks, meal programs, and other community-based organizations, ensuring that Whidbey residents have reliable access to nutritious food during the holiday season and beyond.

Donate now
Let us know you are coming (arrive early, admission not guaranteed)

“We Ain’t Buying It”
Join a nationwide movement to make sure our dollars count as the holiday season approaches!

The "We Ain't Buying It" campaign is an effort to pause shopping with major corporations that are enabling the administration's lawlessness.
From Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, pledge to refrain from buying anything from:
  • Target: For caving to the administration's demands to roll back diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Home Depot: For allowing ICE to use its property to terrorize laborers.
  • Amazon: For (among other things) Jeff Bezos's donation of more than $1 million to the administration and the company's working conditions for warehouse employees and drivers.
Redirect Your Spending: Rather than supporting companies that undermine our democracy, shop small and local with businesses that affirm our humanity and our communities!

Decline to Sign
There are organized efforts underway nationally and here in Washington State to make it harder for people to register to vote and maintain their current registration.

Initiative Measure IL26-126 would require all voters to have an enhanced driver's license or provide documentary proof of US citizenship in person. Voters who fail to do so will have their registrations cancelled.

Remember that noncitizen voting is so vanishingly rare as to be statistically irrelevant. The Initiative Measure is a voter suppression effort thinly disguised as a "solution" to a made-up problem. It would be both burdensome for eligible voters and costly for counties to implement.

Most importantly, it would disenfranchise a significant number of eligible voters, which, of course, is a goal of the administration and its allies. It would disproportionately affect women and less affluent people.

Initiative backers have until January 2 to gather and turn in signatures of nearly 309,000 voters, at which point it goes to the State Legislature, where lawmakers could:
  • Adopt it as written.
  • Approve an alternate initiative, which would appear on the November 2026 ballot next to the original one.
  • Decline to act, sending the measure to voters for a decision.
It's better to ensure this measure fails now. If you encounter signature gatherers for Initiative Measure IL26-126, decline to sign!

Opportunity to Act: Tennessee Special Election
There is a special election in Tennessee's 7th Congressional District that presents an opportunity to flip a red seat blue!

You can help by participating in a phone bank to get out the vote for Aftyn Behn. Previously, Aftyn was a fellow Indivisible, so you'll have a wonderful opportunity to help send someone who shares our values to Capitol Hill.

All you need is a phone and a computer, and organizers will provide brief training before each session, so first-timers are welcome to join! It’s easier and more fun than you think. Yes, you CAN do it!

Dear Friend,

It’s been a wild week of news, but here at Indivisible Whidbey, we are focused on supporting our neighbors as an act of resistance. To that end, we are proud to co-sponsor Whidbey Rising, a benefit concert supporting food security across our island. The Trump government shutdown will have long-term impacts on food banks and other services that help people feed their families. Together, we will fill the gap left by the cruel regime.

United Student Leaders Walkout
Climate change and white supremacy are both pressing issues that threaten each of us, our democracy, and our world every day. South Whidbey High School’s United Student Leaders (USL) is leading a school walkout to highlight these issues. They’ve invited us to join them and support them as they press for action on Friday, November 14, at 1:30 pm.
Meet at the South Whidbey Community Park (Castle Park) picnic area.  Read more about their demands here.

Indivisible Whidbey supports USL as they raise important issues and hone their leadership skills. They are our future!

Meet Our Representative

Representative Clyde Shavers is hosting a town hall meeting this Sunday, November 16.

11:00 am, Whidbey Nordic Hall, 63 Jacobs Rd., Coupeville

He will provide an update on the 2026 legislative session and take questions from community members. Come make your voice heard!

What Do You Care About?
Speaking of making your voice heard, Indivisible Whidbey is working with Indivisible chapters across Washington to have an impact in the 2026 Legislative Session, to advance our priorities, and hold our elected officials accountable.

You can have a voice by filling out the Washington Indivisible Network Legislative Priorities survey. This will help Indivisible leaders set priorities and push for what matters most when legislators convene in Olympia in January.

Mobilize Against ICE
As the actions by ICE become more and more outrageous, we must prepare for increased presence and militarization in our state and in our community.

Sign up now for ICE Mobilization Alerts.

We will stand together and be ready, including training on de-escalation and strategic non-cooperation, distributing whistle kits for community defense, and sharing information so individuals know their rights.

Washington is our home. Let’s be ready if the current regime decides to make it a military target.

Come Together!

Whatever your neighborhood, we have a community social for you!.
Join us to meet your neighbors, discuss issues, and build community!

Invisible and SOS Whidbey are co-sponsoring a South Whidbey get-together to chat, connect, and strengthen ties.

Indivisible Whidbey is looking for a clean, dry place to store our “stuff,” including signs and banners for rallies, meeting supplies, and other items. We don’t need tons of space, but maybe 5x5 would be great. Can you help? Please email us!

Community is an act of resistance. Let’s keep coming together and making a difference!

Whidbey Rises: Coming together to feed the island

11/9/2025

Dear Friend,

In case you've missed it, it's been a monumental week for people around the country who share our values! Voters have spoken, and the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races and the New York City mayoral election stand as resounding rejections of the administration's authoritarian overreach and immoral policies. California voters overwhelmingly chose to obstruct the GOP's desperate attempt to gerrymander congressional seats to hold their slim majority.

Here on Whidbey Island, Indivisible endorsed candidate Anne Johnson kept her seat on the South Whidbey School board. Thanks to everyone who participated in her campaign and worked to ensure our values are exemplified on the school board. More local election results here.

As we look ahead to 2026's midterms, it's clear that we're not alone and that momentum is on our side.

In the meantime, however, there is important work to do. Among the Trump presidency's most abhorrent policy choices has been to starve people. It's up to us to help our neighbors, and we have the will and resources to do so. Read on for how you can help us feed our island!

Whidbey Rising Benefit Concert
Join us as an array of musicians and performers from across Whidbey Island come together for a benefit concert to feed our island community.

The concert will be at Coupeville High School's Performing Arts Center on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 2:00 pm. Doors open at 1:30.

Pay what you want and give generously! Money raised will go to the Whidbey Food Resilience Fund, administered by the Whidbey Community Foundation. It will be shared across the island through rapid, equitable grants to food banks, meal programs, and other community-based organizations, ensuring that Whidbey residents have reliable access to nutritious food during the holiday season and beyond.

Take a look at the amazing list of performers and make an immediate donation here!

National Action
Email our Democratic senators and urge them to keep standing strong in the Trump Shutdown. As Trump’s “maximum pain” shutdown strategy ramps up, Democratic leaders need to hear we’re still with them. We do NOT have to trade short-term pain for long-term suffering and a broken healthcare system. Tell Senators Murray and Cantwell that we’re thankful they are fighting, and urge them to hold the line.

Indivisible Meeting with Senator MurrayRepresentatives from Indivisible groups around the region met virtually with Senator Murray’s staffer Shayna Daitch earlier this week.

After sharing a video detailing healthcare premium increases and food assistance issues, many individuals called in to share their experiences with open enrollment, which is currently in process. Sharing constituent stories is helpful, as the prolonged government shutdown and employee furloughs have made it difficult for Senator Murray to get information from federal agencies.

The House has been in recess, yet Representative Michael Baumgartner (WA-5/Eastern Washington) seems apathetic toward his constituents' food and healthcare challenges. If you have family in Eastern Washington experiencing difficulties, encourage them to share their story with the congressman's office — pressure on GOP legislators makes a difference!

For example, Senator Hawley from Missouri is one of 14 Republicans voicing support for a Democratic-sponsored stand-alone bill to address these specific issues, due to pressure from his constituents. Earlier in the year, pressure from Oklahoma farmers forced the administration to back down on closing weather offices they needed for tornado alerts. Encouraging GOP voters to pressure their representatives could help lead to negotiations.

Attendees noted how videos that Senators Murray and Cantwell share on their websites and BlueSky show that they're fighting for us. Social media is powerful, so share widely with your family and friends!

Student Walk Out
South Whidbey High School’s United Student Leaders is leading a school walkout against climate change and white supremacy. They are inviting community members to join them:

Friday November 14, 1:30pm. Meet at the Castle Park Picnics.  Read more about their demands here.

Indivisible Whidbey supports United Student Leaders as they bring attention, focus and action to important issues and hone their leadership skills. They are our future!

Community Counts!

North, South, and Central Whidbey: we have the island covered with community socials.
Join us to meet others, discuss issues, and build community!

This month, we're co-hosting a special South Whidbey Social with our partners, SOS Whidbey.

November 20, 6 pm-8 pm, United Methodist Church, Langley

We hope you'll join us as we get to know one another and practice finding common values through short storytelling in small groups. We will also share seasonal pies and crisps!

Coupeville (4th Tuesday of every month)
Oak Harbor (1st Monday of every month)
All-island Membership Meeting, Saturday, January 24, 2026, Clinton Community Hall.

Take a moment to celebrate this week’s electoral wins on Whidbey and across the country. Then join us at a community social and the benefit concert. Together, we are having an impact!

Dear Friend,

As right-wing extremists drag out Trump’s  government shutdown, they’ve taken the extraordinarily cruel step of cutting off Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program  (SNAP) funding
effective this Saturday. This move will throw 41 million Americans into hunger. This is clearly a tactic to blame Democrats and force them to yield on the issue of Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Politics aside, more than 2,000 Island County households rely on SNAP, and our neighbors will suffer. It’s up to us to step in and fill the gap as best we can. To combat hunger on our island, you can donate food, money or your time to any of these resources:
  • North Whidbey Help House
  • Meals2kids
  • Gifts from the Heart
  • Whidbey Island Nourishes
  • Queen Bee Pantry
  • Good Cheer

Indivisible Whidbey, in partnership with many other organizations, is planning a benefit concert for our island’s food banks. Can you help make this happen? Please email us to join the planning team, which meets next week. And please plan to attend the benefit — date and time to come.

If you are a SNAP recipient, here are additional resources and things to know:
  • Any funds already on your EBT card will roll over into the next month. They will only be removed if the card is unused for 274 days.
  • Stretch food benefits by using SNAP Match programs whenever possible.
  • Find updates at the Washington State  Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) website.
  • Find local resources at 211.org or by calling 211.
  • Washington Connection also has a Find Services tab
  • The Division of Child Support’s Alternative Solutions database has extensive resources. Review the DSHS reduced-cost services guide for additional resources.
  • If your child is not already signed up for the National School Lunch program, contact your school to see if you can enroll.
  • WIC (food for women, infants, and children) will be funded through at least November.

Vote Today!
Now more than ever, every election matters. Please take the time to cast your ballot if you have not done so already. Ballots must be placed in a ballot box or postmarked by Tuesday, November 4.

Indivisible Whidbey deployed volunteer researchers to look at each contested race on the Island. We offered endorsements only where there was a clear differentiator with one candidate highly qualified and/or the other not.
Read our endorsements here.

Read more analysis and endorsements:
  • Progressive Voters Guide
  • Island County Democrats
  • Marianne’s Poltiblog

Thanks to everyone who has responded to our endorsements, offering differing opinions and new information. We are a grassroots, all-volunteer organization, and we are always learning.  After the election, we are committed to monitoring our elected officials and holding them accountable.

As we look ahead to 2026, here are some ways you can be involved:

  • Sign up to research candidates and help decide on endorsements
  • Join the Legislative Action Team to help hold elected officials accountable
  • Consider running for office! We need qualified, committed people who will work to protect our democracy and civil rights.

Support Ann Johnson
The South Whidbey School Board race is critical.
We know that MAGA is using school boards across the country as an entry point for extremist viewpoints. It’s vital that we elect an individual who will continue to exemplify our values, including protecting civil rights and rejecting censorship.  Read more about Ann Johnson here. Read more about her opponent here. (Neither website was created or vetted by Indivisible Whidbey.)
Ways to help:Text Banking Party:

Membership MeetingIn keeping with our commitment to host events on different parts of the island, our next membership meeting will be at Clinton Hall on the south end on January 24, 1:30 - 3 pm.

Just as our neighbors from the south part of Whidbey Island have made the trip up to Oak Harbor for meetings and events, we hope our North Whidbey friends will make the trip and join us!

We'll be discussing our plans for the 2026 midterm elections locally and across the country. We'll also cover how you can impact the 2026 Washington Legislative session.

Agenda:

A chance to connect with each other, ask or comment on our organizational practices and current news.
Practice finding common values through short story telling. In small groups, we’ll listen with care, reflecting back strengths and values we hear in each other’s stories. This gentle way of connecting and affirming will be useful for building a base for communicating across differences.

  • Coupeville (4th Tuesday of every month)
  • Oak Harbor (1st Monday of every month)

National action
While our priorities this week are voting and helping our neighbors facing food insecurity, there is one step you can take as part of a nationwide campaign to urge music streaming platform Spotify to stop running ICE recruiting ads. You can read more here.
