This week our message is short: VOTE, VOTE, VOTE.
Ballots for the August 4th primary should have arrived in your mailboxes. 1. Make Sure You Receive Your Ballot If you have not received your ballot, visit www.VoteWA.gov or contact the Elections Office by email at [email protected] to check your registration and request a replacement ballot. 2. Consider Your Vote Use the Indivisible Whidbey Membership Endorsements as one data point as you decide who you want to represent you. 3. Vote the Whole Ballot This year, more than ever, every single position counts! Vote the whole ballot, paying special attention to the Washington Supreme Court positions. See the endorsements for insight into the judges. 4. Act Early to Protect Your Vote! The US Postal Service is now postmarking pieces of mail, including ballots, when they are processed through postal facilities, rather than when they are dropped in a mailbox. With the Everett Postal Processing Center closed due to budget cuts, your ballot may be processed in Seattle or beyond. Make sure your ballot counts by voting early and returning your ballot at an official county ballot drop box:

Vigil to Demand Justice This Saturday, join a vigil in a nearby community to mourn Lorenzo, Johan, and all victims of ICE and fight for accountability. Vigils of every size can help ensure that Lorenzo’s and Johan’s killings do not fade from public attention and send a clear message: No government agency should be allowed to kill anyone, intimidate witnesses, or operate with impunity. If you can’t make it to one of the vigils in the link, please consider joining your neighbors at the following regular events. The news this week has been more shocking and disturbing than usual, with two more people gunned down by ICE. It’s hard to fathom the unchecked lawlessness and even harder to know there are families and communities grieving after senseless deaths. As we once again process the deaths of innocents at the hands of our government, let’s take solace in our community and our commitment to one another on the island and around the nation. While we may feel overwhelmed, we vote, we stand together, and we refuse to look away.
The most important thing we can do as citizens in the short term is exercise our right to VOTE. Ballots for the August 4th primary will arrive in your mailboxes any day now! Good Trouble Lives On This Weekend This weekend, we honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader Congressman John Lewis. This year’s theme is “Teach! Reach! Preach!” to encourage non-partisan voter engagement, civic education, and faith-based organizing. If you feel like getting out with a sign, join one of these regular protests this Saturday: Bayview: Saturday mornings, 10 am at Bayview Park and Ride Coupeville: Saturday mornings, 11 am-12 pm at the Coupeville overpass Oak Harbor: Saturday mornings, 11 am-12 pm at Beeksma Park There are also several regional events. That means we need to be able to disagree and still come together around our shared values and commitment to our community and our country.
We recognize that the endorsements made by Indivisible Whidbey members have left some people dissatisfied. The good news is, it means people care! It’s GOOD to see passion, disagreement, and dialogue! That is why the endorsement process was open and transparent. We put out a broad request for volunteers to conduct in-depth research. Their exhaustive work included candidate interviews and collecting facts. We also put out a request for input from anyone who had information about the candidates. At our membership meeting, we shared the research, created time for conversation and dialogue, and ultimately held a vote by the members. That membership vote determined these endorsements. This is democracy! The results don’t always make everyone happy. Indivisible Whidbey’s membership endorsements are one data point. We have candidate forums (see below) and nearly a month of campaigning before the primary. So continue to pay attention, talk about the issues, disagree, and share your passion. Then VOTE! The upcoming ballot is about much more than one race or one issue, so be sure to vote the entire ballot. And as you vote, commit to continuing to work as a community to protect democracy and protect people. Together, we can shape a thriving future. Calling Young Families Speaking of needing everyone, Indivisible Whidbey would like to make it easy (and fun!) for families with young children to help shape our future. Jumping into politics can feel overwhelming, but there is a lot at stake for parents who are trying to raise children in today’s world. Let’s get together and talk about it. There is so much going on and so much opportunity to have impact. Let’s continue to pay attention, find ways to take action, and support one another in this important work. But in the end, we all have a voice and a vote, and together we elect leaders who will stand for our values.
At Sunday’s membership meeting, more than 100 of us showed up to review research on candidates in 10 races. For some races, we were nearly unanimous about who the pro-democracy, pro-civil-rights candidate is. For other races, it was less clear. Using ranked choice voting, we decided on these endorsements. Huge thanks to everyone who showed up, listened, shared information, and cast votes. It was inspiring and impressive to see democracy at work! Now it’s up to us to share these endorsements widely, commit to voting, and work hard to get others to do the same. Candidate Forums Indivisible Whidbey's endorsements are just one data point.
