Let’s keep the momentum going at our all-island Membership Meeting: Sunday, April 26, 2 pm Via Zoom Sign up here to receive the Zoom link. Special guests: Representative Clyde Shavers and Sheriff Rick Felici. We will also have important updates about elections, opportunities to get involved, and the progress we are making. We are experimenting with an occasional Zoom meeting to include those who may not be able to meet in person. We aim to keep this meeting to one hour. May Day Protests How will you make your voice heard this May Day? Around the country, there will be walk-outs, economic boycotts, and strategic non-cooperation. Here are some easy ways to participate on Whidbey Island: Shop local! Support our local economy while avoiding online and big box purchases. Walk out! Not everyone can leave their job or school, but if you can, talk with your coworkers about making an impact by not participating for all or part of the day. Alternatively, if you’re not able to cut class or work, how about a lunchtime rally with your coworkers or fellow students? Donate. Some great on-island causes: Neighbor to Neighbor Fund, supporting immigrants. Make donations via Langley Methodist Church. Whidbey Food Resilience Fund supports food security across the island. Indivisible Whidbey! Hang a sign! Place a sign in your yard, on your car or at your place of work showing your support for workers, democracy and civil rights. Grab a friend and attend a rally in Port Townsend, Anacortes, or Seattle. You might be wondering, Why is there no Indivisible-sponsored protest on Whidbey? A hardy and committed group of volunteers runs Indivisible Whidbey. After planning the No Kings Rally and co-sponsoring Democracy Fest, we did not have the capacity to go big for May Day. Want to help plan the next big thing? Please raise your hand to volunteer. We especially need leaders for these events! Run for Something! Are you ready to step forward and run for public office? We need candidates who will advocate for democracy and civil rights. Filing week for scores of Island County races, online or in person, is May 4 - 8, 2026. If you’re new to public office, Precinct Committee Officer (PCO) positions are open in every district, have no filing fee, and are a great way to get involved in local organizing, voter engagement, and party leadership in your immediate area. For details, visit the Island County Information webpage. Endorse Someone! Once we get past the filing date, the real work begins. Our research team will learn all they can about candidates. Join the research team by April 30 and be part of the kick-off on May 4. Using their work, Indivisible Whidbey will come together to decide on endorsements. In case you haven’t heard, Hungary voted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán out of office over the weekend. In office for 16 years, Orban was the highest-tenured prime minister in Europe. He was also a right-wing ideologue. In many ways, he was the pattern Trump, MAGA, and Project 2025 sought to copy.
And, despite 16 years of rigging his country’s processes and institutions to his benefit, the people voted him out of office. If Hungary can do it, so can we! We are looking forward to coming together as a community this Saturday at Democracy Fest. It’s our chance to learn, engage and take action! This event is non-partisan, and we welcome people across the political spectrum who value the rule of law, due process, free and fair elections, separation of powers, and the principles of the Constitution. How much does it cost? Democracy Fest is free, with free parking at the farm. Who is putting it on? It is sponsored by the League of Women Voters Whidbey Island, Indivisible Whidbey, SOS Whidbey, The Whidbey Democratic Club, and many other members of the Whidbey Island pro-democracy coalition. This year, Indivisible and many other pro-democracy groups are calling for a nation-wide day of non-cooperation – no work, no school, no shopping at major outlets. Here on Whidbey, we have chosen not to host a centralized event. Instead, we are asking our members to take the May Day Pledge here and commit to whatever actions work for you. If you want to join a protest, there’s one in Port Townsend and several in Seattle– check out locations on the map. This one day of action is to prepare and practice non-cooperation in case we need to commit to sustained action later. History tells us mass non-cooperation is one of the most impactful means for The People to exercise our collective power. Voting, of course, is another. Well done, Hungary! See you Saturday at Greenbank Farm! Indivisible Whidbey Steering Committee Dear Friend, The news this past week has been frightening and infuriating. After launching an illegal and dangerous war, our Commander-in-Chief threatened to wipe out an entire civilization (genocide) and target civilian infrastructure (yet more war crimes). Next came a cease-fire that ultimately leaves our nation in a worse position than before this pointless dalliance. All of this to distract us from the real issues of voter suppression, the Epstein files, rampant corruption, and the march to fascism. We won’t be discouraged or distracted. It’s never been more important to fight for our democracy and civil rights, keeping an eye on our biggest chance to halt this regime: This November’s mid-term elections. Speak Out Against Deranged LeadershipJump on the Take Action Network and call on our members of Congress to stand up to Trump’s sick and sadistic rhetoric. A sample email is supplied, but feel free to use your own words. Take action now. With so much at stake, we can’t remain silent or allow this to become normal!
